Formed in Boise, Idaho, originally as a two piece consisting of guitarist/vocalist Robert Taylor Roark and drummer Jered Veeneman, Old Year’s formative days were spent behind closed doors – a rumour on their local underground music scene, a secretive side project of personal catharsis. However, in 2021 they emerged from the enforced isolation of the global pandemic as a fully formed trio, joined by bassist Skyler Rezendes and took their art to the stages of Boise, in all its dread and despair, a tormented hybrid of drone, doom and death. An eponymous single was released in 2023, 10+ minutes of soul scouring terror that caught the ear of Apocalyptic Witchcraft, with label head Conor Droney describing the band as producing “music for the end of all things, and the silence that follows.” Now the first fruits of this new alliance are about to be revealed…Old Year’s four track debut album of monolithic menace, No Dissent..

The pressure begins to build as soon as ‘Death Frequency’ steps from the silence in an excoriating flood of feedback and blood. The unease starts to transform into terror and a need to escape, to turn your head from this visceral vision of dystopia. But your free will drains away into the morass of world eating sound. Gargantuan chords progress like tectonic plates over drum beats which summon visions of the fading heartbeat of a dying universe, deep, dispassionate vocals deliver unbearable truths and lead guitar notes bring a razor blade sharpness to the overwhelming desolation. Old Year drag you, lethargic and lifeless, through broken landscapes under a burning, acid sky and as you reach the monumental oppression of ‘Lock Step’ you can feel yourself dissolving into the awesome mass they have created. All sense of self dissipates, bleeding into an ocean of decaying souls and rotten dreams. Old Year have created a formidable edifice of bleak portent.

No Dissent is the sonic realisation of an uncompromising vision, unflinching in its harsh presentation of the ongoing, inevitable deterioration and putrefaction of the human spirit. It is challenging listening, but as rewarding as it is demanding. Apocalyptic Witchcraft will open the door to Old Year’s terrifying, claustrophobic world on October 24th. Be ready to face the prospect of insidious annihilation.
